Japanese Woman Arrested For Selling Demon Slayer Cakes

On November 9, Metropolitan Police Department of Japan reported an arrest of a 34 year old woman in Tokyo’s Shibuya Wardon, on the charges of violating copyright laws.

The woman was arrested for decorating cakes with the illustration of Demon Slayer anime series. The police department reported that the cakes were being sold by the woman through her Instagram account. She was selling each piece of cake at the price between 13,000 yen to 15,000 yen (which is roughly $120 US). The investigators estimate that she made a profit of roughly $57,000 US in 2 years, from July 2019.

I thought it would sell more if I made it with a popular anime character. I knew it was a crime“, the woman said during the questioning. The customers would send her demon slayers illustrations, and she will design the cake according to that. The production company became aware of this illegal business, and notified the police station in February.
